Donald J. Elmer, Interim CEO and Chairman of the Board
Mr. Elmer is the managing general partner of Pacific Horizon Ventures. He is currently a board member of iScience Interventional and ViaCyte, Inc. He has extensive prior board experience and has successful operational experience over a twelve-year period in early-stage technology companies, including Cascadia Technology Corporation-a medical electronics company-and Cygnet Systems Corporation-a software developer. Mr. Elmer received his M.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Graham K. Crooke, MBBS
Dr. Crooke is a General Partner at Helix Ventures. Prior to co-founding Helix Ventures in 2008 he led the life sciences investment effort at Asset Management Company from 2000-2008. Prior to that, he was a partner at Ticonderoga Capital, where, for eight years he focused on biotechnology and healthcare service investments. Before helping to form Ticonderoga, he was a partner of Dillon Read Venture Capital and Vice President of Dillon, Read & Co. Inc., where he was responsible for evaluating and managing life science investments. From 1984 to 1986 he practiced medicine in Western Australia. Dr. Crooke is a director of InsMed, Inc., a public biotechnology company and a number of private companies. Dr. Crooke received his medical degree from the University of Western Australia and his M.B.A. from Stanford University.
Richard V. McCloskey, M.S. M.D.
Dr. McCloskey graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and did post graduate training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Duke University and the National Institutes of Health, followed by academic appointments at Duke, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Thomas Jefferson University and the University of Pennsylvania. He directed antimicrobial clinical research at Hoffmann La Roche and clinical research at Centocor. He served as Vice President of Medical Technology at Johnson and Johnson Development Corporation until 2008. He has been a scientific adviser to Synageva and currently is an adviser to Endo Pharmaceuticals. He is also on the board of Oyagen and Zyngenia. He is certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is an emeritus fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Jeffrey J. Miller, Ph.D.
Dr. Miller received a Ph.D. in biophysics from UCLA and UC Santa Cruz in 1976. He earned a law degree and focused his intellectual property practice in biotechnology. Following a partnership at Seed & Berry in Seattle, he joined NeoRx in 1987 as an executive officer and was responsible for all aspects of FDA approval and commercialization of NeoRx's first product. Nine years later he joined Ostex International as chief strategy officer followed by two years as CEO of Reprogen, a functional genomics company. For the next five years Dr. Miller served as senior vice president of aQuantive, Inc. an internet technology company. Presently, Dr. Miller is on the board of directors of AmKor Pharma and Tissue Repair Company. Dr. Miller's career achievements include obtaining the first US patent for an animal on behalf of the University of Washington, structuring and negotiating numerous multimillion dollar technology license agreements, and managing legal aspects of more than $250M in private and public debt and equity transactions.
George Painter, Ph.D.
Dr. Painter has twenty-four years of experience in the discovery and development of pharmaceutical agents. He is currently the President and CEO of Chimerix and previously held the position of Executive Vice President, Research and Development, at Triangle Pharmaceuticals where he was a member of the founding management team. In addition to his management experience at Chimerix and Triangle Pharmaceuticals, beginning in 1983, Dr. Painter held positions at Burroughs Wellcome Co., including Director of Chemistry and Director of Virology. Subsequently, he served as Director of Research Process and International Deputy Therapeutic Head for Antiviral Research at Glaxo Wellcome Inc. Dr. Painter is a co-inventor of over forty-five patents, six of which have led to approved commercially available drugs or combinations of drugs for the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B. He has led international teams, which generated data for nine investigational new drug applications and three new drug applications. Dr. Painter earned a B.S. in chemistry, an M.S. in physical organic chemistry and a Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry from Emory University.
